Gustav Mahler's first song cycle, the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen or Songs of a Wayfarer, was written as a reaction to unrequited love. True to the form of Mahler's later work, the cycle encompasses both the resplendent beauty of nature and the peculiar beauty of loneliness.
